Shrewsbury Big Town Walk

Four family friendly guided walks. All start at 11am and include visits to historic and beautiful spots. All are circular routes and stay close to town, so you can do the whole route or just part of it. See the events on this page for details of each route.

  • Full route will take up to 3 hours; bring water and a snack!

West Route: Radbrook, Copthorne, Porthill and Frankwell

This route takes in both the riverside round Frankwell and the green areas at Radbrook and Nobold.

  • Easy reach from: Radbrook, Copthorne, Porthill and Frankwell
  • Starting points: Hermitage Community Gardens in Mountfields, or at Radbrook Community Centre
  • Visit: Darwin's birthplace and the garden where Charles Darwin played as a child in Mountfields, the Conduit Head Apiary and Visitors Centre at Nobold - home of the Shropshire Beekeepers Association centre
  • Starting time: 11am
  • Finishing time: If you wish to complete the route expect to return to your starting point by 2pm, but feel free to do a section of the walk.
  • Distance: 6 miles

East Route: Monkmoor, Cherry Orchard, Underdale, Belvidere

  • Easy reach from: Monkmoor, Cherry Orchard, Underdale, Belvidere
  • Starting points: Stanley Avenue Cafe or The Column
  • Visit: The Wier, where you can hear about the idea for energy generation, and the Shropshire Wildlife Trust HQ. It will also include a lovely riverside loop out to the east of the town
  • Starting time: 11am
  • Finishing time: If you wish to complete the route expect to return to your starting point by 2:30pm, but feel free to do a section of the walk.
  • Distance: 7 miles

North Route: Greenfields, Coton Hill, Mount Pleasant, Spring Gardens

  • Easy reach from: Greenfields, Coton Hill, Ditherington, Mount Pleasant, Spring Gardens
  • Starting points: The Flaxmill and Ashfields Recreation Ground
  • Visit: The Flaxmill and Coton Hill community allotments, plus take in the fabulous view back across the town from Hencote.
  • Starting time: 11am
  • Finishing time: If you wish to complete the route expect to return to your starting point by 2pm, but feel free to do a section of the walk.
  • Distance: 5 miles

South Walk: Meole Brace, Belle Vue, Sutton

Take time to enjoy a guided visit through the Victorian cemetary - it was always meant as a park too.

  • Easy reach from: Belle Vue, Meole Brace and Sutton
  • Starting points: Trinity Churches, Meole Village, and Longden Road Cemetery
  • Visit: The Victorian cemetary and Reabrook Nature Reserve, where there will be the chance to learn about it's care and to brush up on your tree identification skills!
  • Starting time: 11am
  • Finishing time: If you wish to complete the route expect to return to your starting point by 2pm, but feel free to do a section of the walk.
  • Distance: 6 miles

Shrewsbury Big Town Walk is a community event with the support of Shrewsbury Town Council, Shropshire Council, Shropshire Wildlife Trust and the Big Town Plan partnership.
