Green Party got 5% of the vote

11 May 2015

The Green Party candidates, running in Shrewsbury and Atcham and North Shropshire constituencies both finished in 5th place with just under 5% of the votes. This represents a quadrupling of the vote share from 2010 in Shrewsbury and Atcham and a tripling of the votes for North Shropshire.

Green Party candidate for Shrewsbury and Atcham, Emma Bullard, said, “I'd like to thank everyone in the Shrewsbury and Atcham constituency who voted Green this time and everyone who helped with our campaign. Green policies on ending austerity, investing in public services, fair votes and dealing with climate change have been very popular at hustings and in conversations with voters and our support and membership are at record levels across the
country. We will now build on this growing support locally and renew our efforts to create a fairer society."

Green Party Candidate for North Shropshire, Duncan Kerr, said, “"We had our best result ever in North Shropshire and I'd like to thank all the people who voted Green to show that there is an alternative in this constituency and that they want to see action on climate change, banning fracking and an end to the badger cull. Dealing with these issues and offering an alternative to austerity is still just as urgent as I argued during the campaign, and I'll be continuing my efforts as an Oswestry town councillor and working with new Green groups in Wem, Whitchurch and St Martins."

“These are exciting times for the Green Party. Our membership has quadrupled in recent months as is evidenced by the fact that nationally over 1 million people voted for the Green Party. Under a fairer voting system the Green Party would now have 25 MPs. It is just a shame that under this unfair electoral system, the percentage of votes we get does not transfer to
representation in parliament. We will continue to work towards our goal of building a society and political system that works for the common good.”
