John Newnham, a resident of Meole for more than 25 years, has been selected as Green Party candidate for the forthcoming by-election in the Meole ward in Shrewsbury. A wise exponent of the dangers of climate change, John is also a staunch friend of his local community helping people in need to get satisfaction from Shirehall.
John’s candidacy comes at a time of unprecedented growth for the Green Party which saw their vote in Shrewsbury quadruple at the recent General Election.
John Newnham said, ‘There are too few councillors at Shirehall willing to hold our council cabinet to account. I relish the opportunity of representing the people of Meole on issues that I feel passionate about of specific relevance to our local area. These include adequate provision of social housing, an improved public transport service and, as Chair of the Shrewsbury Ramblers, ensuring restrictions to development within the green belt to allow access to neighbouring green space for all.’
John will be meeting neighbours and other community members across Meole to enable voters to share their concerns and to consider Green Party’s values and policies. John will also be running a stall on Saturday 21st November from 11:00 – 1:00 on the footpath that runs from the primary school at Burnside Gardens to Maesbrook Road shops to enable everyone to put their views to John and to get to know him before voting day on 3rd December.
John is particularly keen to remind residents of Meole that they have until Tuesday 17th November to register to vote (this can be done online www.gov.uk/register-to-vote). Registered voters can apply for a postal vote until Wednesday 18th November. The form can be downloaded here.
John can be contacted on 01743 353858.
