Seven fold increase in Green vote in Shropshire

5 May 2017

Julian DeanThe Green Party in Shropshire is celebrating success across the county with a huge seven fold increase in votes compared with the last county election in 2013. In Shrewsbury the Green Party won our first ever seat in the town, in Porthill, where a positive campaign by Julian Dean (pictured left) excited enthusiastic support. In Oswestry West Barry Edwards was just pipped to the post by just 11 votes putting him in a strong position for next time. In the neighbouring Oswestry South ward our by-election win of February 2016 was reversed but Duncan Kerr nevertheless won a substantial increase in votes with a vote share of 48%. From Whitchurch to Craven Arms and from Market Drayton to Llanymynech Green candidates gained record public support.

[Edit: An earlier version of this news item claimed a ten fold increase in votes.  It seems we became a little numerically challenged in our excitement at such an excellent result.]
