On 5th May this year Shropshire’s voters will have a chance to elect a new Police and Crime Commissioner for West Mercia (Shropshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire) The Green Party candidate, John Raine is a very experienced crime and justice professor and is determined to make a big difference to the West Mercia area he would serve.

Duncan Kerr, recently elected as the Green Party Councillor for South Oswestry is undertaking a cycle challenge to raise money for Chalk, a Community Interest Company in Oswestry. In just three days he aims to cycle 333 miles starting in Oswestry and visiting Fishguard, Rosslare (in Eire), Dublin, Holyhead and back; 3 countries, 3 islands but just two wheels and two legs!

We welcome the objectives “to reduce the volume of traffic flows through the historic and commercial town centre”. However, we have considerable misgivings about the expenditures in the existing SITP proposals as we do not believe they will achieve their aims in relation to reducing town-centre traffic and encouraging sustainable modes of transport.

John Newnham, Green Party candidate in the Meole by election on 3rd December, has welcomed the resignation of Keith Barrow from the board of Shropshire Council’s company ip&e. As the only candidate in the Meole by election to have made an issue of ip&e needing to be run in an open manner with integrity he is pleased to have been vindicated by the Standards Sub-Committee.

A wise exponent of the dangers of climate change, John is also a staunch friend of his local community helping people in need to get satisfaction from Shirehall. John’s candidacy comes at a time of unprecedented growth for the Green Party which saw their vote in Shrewsbury quadruple at the recent General Election.
